I gained a great understanding of where he’s coming from, and an appreciation of what he’s been doing over the last 11 years. Craig has been publishing a photo-book a week! These are not cloth-bound books, but smaller stapled books, giving photographers with archives from the 1970s onwards an outlet.
Craig started in publishing from being a fine artist (and teacher) with a passion for collecting printed material. Then he realised that he could be a producer too. He says he really enjoys publishing documents of the everyday – everyday England (mostly). What were perhaps photographs of the banal are now a historic record. The “documents” that Craig is publishing though are not mere records, they are particularly well-seen, like the one below.
I already own some of the books Cafe Royal have produced, but was so inspired by this talk that I walked back to the Photo Publishers’ Book Market and bought three more (top photo).
The photo below is from “Weekend Away” by Paddy Summerfield.
